- All Metal
- Porcelain Fused to Metal
- All Ceramic
In my practice we use mostly all ceramic crowns for a variety of reasons including
- Great fit
- Great Esthetics
- No metal- reducing the gray metal line and hypoallergenic
- Strong and fracture resistant
In nearly 35 years of practicing dentistry, I have used all types of crowns on my patients. In the early years, we used porcelain fused to metal crowns in the front of mouths and all gold crowns in the back. As patients’ demands changed, we started using porcelain fused to metal crowns in the back of the mouth. I’m sure you have noticed an odd looking front tooth in someone you know. That most likely is a porcelain fused to metal crown. It looks odd, because the underlying metal does not allow light to pass through it like a natural tooth does causing the tooth to look opaque. You might even notice a dark line at the gum line. It really is not aesthetically appealing at all.
The good news is, I now currently use several types of ALL CERAMIC crowns fabricated in a dental laboratory. There are numerous reasons for this including great strength and fracture resistance as well as superior esthetics. With these awesome all ceramic crowns, you cannot tell the difference between a crown or a natural tooth.
A newer type of crown is a CAD/CAM crown which can be fabricated in on office with a turnaround in a few hours. When I had the ability in my office to produce this type of restoration, I felt that the laboratory created a much better finished product, and 100% of my patients preferred a lab fabricated prosthesis.
In summary, the advantages of a lab fabricated all ceramic crown include superior esthetics, uncompromised fit, no metal and great strength and fracture resistance. If you are in need of a new crown in either the front or the back of your mouth, please call our office to schedule a consultation. We can go over all of the advantages of an all ceramic crown that would be best suited for you!
